Solo Mobile introducing plans, Samsung CLEO and Pearl 8130

Canadian wireless provider Solo Mobile  announced it is introducing four new voice plans and two new handsets to its line-up. The Bell sub-brand enhanced its Unbeatable and Solo in the City plans, giving users what it says is better value. It now waives the controversial System Access Fees and emergency 911 charges to new subscribers who sign up for a two-year contract. This represents a savings of about $8 CAD (about $6.75) per month.

Four new plans include the $15 CAD ($12.66) Unbeatable plan that includes 50 minutes and 50 text messages per month, per-second billing, call waiting and three-way calling. For another $5, users can share minutes and get unlimited local and long-distance national calling as well as unlimited texting with up to four family members and friends.

The same features are available for new Solo in the City plans that include a $40, 2,000-local

minutes per month and $60 for 4,250 minutes. Both have unlimited texting included as well. The new plans are offered from November 7th to December 31st.

At the same time, the provider will add the Samsung Cleo flip phone to its hardware offerings, as well as the new BlackBerry Pearl 8130. The Cleo is unusual and sports a QWERTY keyboard in a squat clamshell form factor designed partly to resemble a makeup mirror. It also carries up to 8GB of memory thanks to a microSD slot. Bluetooth support and a 1.3-megapixel camera are also built into the handset. The Pearl 8130 is adapted from Bell’s network, and comes with a 2-megapixel camera, GPS and the candybar BlackBerry’s characteristic 3G data network and push e-mail support.

The Cleo is priced at $100 on a three-year contract with Solo Mobile, while pricing for the Pearl 8130 has not yet been announced.

ASUS finally details ET1602 / ET1603 Eee Top all-in-one PCs

If you’ve paid any attention to the release cycle of ASUS’ Eee Top, you’d have noticed by now that things have been done in quite the unorthodox way. Although we’ve already learned most everything we need to know from buyers in global markets, ASUS has finally seen fit to do us English-speaking folk a solid and host up official detail sites for both the ET1602 and ET1603. Both rigs boast a 15.6-inch touchscreen LCD, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB 5,400RPM hard drive, 1.3-megapixel webcam, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi, a pair of stereo speakers, two USB 2.0 ports, a multicard reader, audio in / out and a swank carry handle for lugging it around. The only difference between the two flavors is the GPU; the ET1602 includes an integrated graphics set, while the ET1603 packs a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD3450. Per usual, ASUS isn’t dishing out any further pricing / release deets, but most everything else you could ever want to know (about the pair, not life or taxes) is just a click or two away.

ASUS 14.1-inch B80A business laptop: it’s for the corporate elite

Yeah, the “corporate elite.” Or, so says ASUS, anyway. Just months after the business-minded B50A hit the scene, along comes a slightly more portable iteration to tickle the fancy of the fanciest suits. The B80A comes rockin’ an all black motif, 14.1-inch WXGA (or WXGA+) display, your choice of Intel’s Core 2 Duo T9400, T5850, P8600 or P7350, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a SATA hard drive ranging from 160GB to 250GB, dual-layer DVD writer, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi and a 6-cell battery to boot. You’ll also find a very consumer-friendly HDMI output, a backlit, spill-proof keyboard and a fingerprint reader. ‘Tis a shame ASUS never feels like fessing up to a price or release date, but at least you now know whether it’s worth your while to hunt one down.

Aspire One shipments on pace to beat Eee PC

Acer’s Aspire One has been somewhat overlooked in the face of a relentless barrage of Eee PCs and other netbooks, but slow and steady tends to win the race — Acer says it’s on track to ship six million machines this year, which is ahead of ASUS’s target of five million Eees. Acer’s mostly pulled into the lead due to its size and ability to push the Aspire One globally, while ASUS (which less than half the revenue) has been building the Eee market by market. Of course, that doesn’t mean ASUS is going down without a fight — we’ve already seen some aggressive ads, and Acer doesn’t have anything to match machines like the S101. Looks like the netbook market is starting to get heated — it’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out over the next few months.

AT&T officially delivers free WiFi to BlackBerry / iPhone users

We thought we’d heard the last of this whole AT&T / Starbucks WiFi deal yesterday, but alas, we were terrifically mistaken. AT&T has come forth today with two fluffy press releases that flesh out the details, and amazingly, there are some inclusions that we weren’t made aware of yesterday. For starters, all iPhone / iPhone 3G customers will now have free (and seemingly limitless) access to AT&T WiFi hotspots across the US — we’re talking Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, the whole lot. Additionally, the carrier has welcomed select BlackBerry users — that’s the Bold for now, the Pearl 8120 / 8820 “later this year” — into the same deal, though the official verbiage mentions that an “unlimited data plan” is required. If you didn’t make the cut this time, fret not — AT&T has plans to invite “more mobile devices” into the fold here shortly.

Softbank introduces Sharp Aquos Fulltouch slider with quasi-XGA resolution

Just when we thought the Touch HD really packed the pixels in, Softbank and Sharp have announced the Aquos Fulltouch 931SH slider, which sports a wild 1024 x 480 3.8-inch touchscreen. That’s almost the same res as most netbooks, for comparison — we’re not sure what all that pixel density is good for at this size, but we know we want it. Apart from the screen it’s also a pretty solid 3G Softbank featurephone: browser, Bluetooth with A2DP, 5.2 megapixel camera with image stabilizer, accelerometer, 1seg TV tuner, and a media player with microSD expansion. Sure, sure — but look at that screen, people. That’s the stuff dreams are made of. Anyone up for a trip to Japan?

Moto CEO casually name drops Windows Mobile 6.5 in conference call

We’ve all been waiting patiently for Windows Mobile 7 to drop since the crust of the Earth was still cooling, and at this point, Windows 7 proper could theoretically beat it out of the gate. What’s a perpetually delayed platform to do, then? Come up with another stop-gap measure, of course. Windows Mobile 6.1 was designed to plug some short-term holes in 6, and it’s looking now like there could be a 6.5 waiting in the wings to plug a few more. Nothing has really been revealed about the mysterious, heretofore-unknown version, but Motorola CEO mentioned it in passing during the company’s earnings call today while discussing the fact that 6.1 really hasn’t been able to keep pace with Apple in the “user experience” department. Would it be totally naive of us to hope for a little Xbox Live Anywhere in there?

T-Mobile G1 launched in the UK

Just in time for the big (if somewhat quirky) G1 unlocking, Android fans in the UK will be getting their chance to purchase the T-Mobile handset starting today. Britons began queuing up on Oxford Street as early as 5 am to get the phone, currently available for free with a 2-year £40 ($65) monthly contract. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, The Gadget Inspectors went to Google’s London HQ for a hands-on review (nothing new to Engadget die-hards, but it’s interesting to see what they make of the device). Video after the break.

Kanye West fails to single-handedly save B&O’s handset biz

Looks like Bang and Olufsen might have a harder time getting out of the cellphone game than it thought — especially now that Kanye’s throwing cash at it. Yep, Yeezy just picked up the year-old Serenata in Singapore, and he’s thoughtfully posted up some unboxing pics for us. We thought the Samsung-built handset was a hot little number when we played with it back in January at CES, but we’ve moved on since then — it’s a triband dumbphone, after all. We’ve got some hotter gear to show you, ‘Ye — call anytime.

Vodafone’s BlackBerry Storm pricing plans eke out

Remember when Vodafone told us to hold our horses a bit on the pricing details when the BlackBerry Storm was made official this month? Believe it or not, the holding period is over, and now we’re staring some actual price tags in the face. Reportedly, Voda will make the touchscreen BlackBerry available with four different pricing plans, so we’ll get right to it. The Perfect Choice Access 100 plan will get you a Storm for €109.99 ($141), while the per-month rate (€49.99; $64) will include 100 minutes (yes, seriously), 100 texts (still for real here, people), 1GB of BlackBerry e-mail, mobile TV and ten music downloads. The Perfect Choice Access 200 / 400 / 600 plans bump up the minutes and texts just as you’d expect for €64.99 / €84.99 / €99.99 per month while netting you the phone for €64.99 / €69.99 / €49.99, respectively. For the full spill, head on down to the read link — meanwhile, here in America, we all sit waiting for Verizon to follow suit…

Department of Justice approves Verizon’s Alltel acquisition, requires more concessions

The suits at the Department of Justice just green-lighted Verizon’s planned acquisition of regional rival Alltel, moving the two CDMA giants closer to a marriage that would easily eclipse AT&T to become the largest wireless carrier in North America. There’s a catch, though, and a rather hefty one at that — Verizon has to agree to divest itself of some 100 local markets in 22 states to keep the competitive landscape in action; given that they’ve already indicated a willingness to shed some markets to seal the deal, it probably won’t be an issue. The next hurdle for Vertel (or Allzon, depending on how you roll) will come on November 4, when the FCC votes on whether it’ll bless the deal. As for the rumors that Verizon is now eligible to get Alltel at a 50 percent discount with a $1 billion mail-in rebate if it agrees to a two-year contract, we’re not hearing any comment from either side.

Samsung announces Beat-s music phone

Samsung have announced two music-focused handsets - the Beatb, and Beats. The Beat b will be available later this month, and the S, sometime next month. Being music-focused handsets, they feature several things you’d expect to see in a music-minded handset, such as an FM Radio, dedicated music keys, 3.5 mm jack, etc. Also, both handsets come with a unique application, called Shazam, which, when you play part of a song, it will do its best to correctly identify it. Technical specs for the BeatS are as follows:

  • Connectivity: Tri-band GSM, EDGE, GPRS
  • Display: 2.0″, QVGA resolution, shows up to 262 thousand colours
  • Camera: Two megapixels
  • Memory: MicroSD card slot
  • Extras: Bluetooh and USB 2.0, FM Radio with RDS, 3.5 mm jack, Shazam song identifying app, auto equalizer
  • Battery: 800 mAh
